Open invitations are being extended on behalf of Professor Charles Gilks, Queensland Professorial Chair in HIV and STIs, to professionals and academics and professionals working in the area of HIV & STIs to join this strategy development workshop.

We are seeking additional expert opinions to provide valuable input to the development of the draft Chair Research Strategy.

Research in the areas of HIV, STIs and BBV is at a critical juncture in the State. The HIV Foundation Queensland (HIVFQ) has been defunded, which supported significant research in the HIV and STI sector. We are also approaching the half way point in the current Queensland Sexual Health Strategy 2016-2021 and the accompanying HIV Action Plan at a time where we welcome a new Minister for Health.

With these changes in mind, the Professorial Chair is seeking to make a positive intervention to how research for evidence informed policy and better health outcomes in the State, can be reenergised.

The afternoon will commence with a brief summary of the research landscape for HIV and STIs developed by Professor Jeff Gow, former Director of Research HIVFQ. Professor Gilks will then review the current gaps, issues and capacities for HIV and STI research in Queensland and present the draft Chair Research strategy.

The majority of the afternoon will then comprise of group discussions about the strategy and potential research areas and priorities. This session will report back and be facilitated by Dr Owain Williams.
