Gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are common obstetric complications each affecting approximately 5 to 10 per cent of women during pregnancy. Both complications increase the risk of adverse health outcomes during pregnancy and delivery, and following birth both mothers and their children are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Identification of modifiable risk factors may contribute to prevention. This PhD project aimed to examine the role of dietary factors in de development of gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. We systematically synthesised current evidence from observational studies reporting on these associations. Using data from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health, we examined associations of pre-pregnancy dietary patterns with gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and explored the importance of body mass index as a pathway. This presentation will summarise our key findings.

The combined use of alcohol and illicit stimulants represents an emerging area of concern, with research suggesting that combined use may result in greater harms than separate use of these substances. While there appears to be high rates of risky drinking among amphetamine-type stimulant (ATS; i.e., ecstasy [MDMA] and methamphetamine) users in Australia, knowledge of community patterns of concurrent and simultaneous ATS and alcohol use is limited and potential consequences of combined use are largely unknown. Using data from a longitudinal population-based study of young adult users and non-users of ATS in South-East Queensland, this presentation examines patterns of concurrent and simultaneous ATS and alcohol use among and potential outcomes, such as aggression and hostility and contact with police.
