Professor Kimber Richter presents: Nudging People who use Tobacco to Engage in Treatment and Quit

Most people who use tobacco do not receive evidence-based treatment to help them quit. Current clinical practice typically requires patients to “opt in” to care by stating that they want to quit and actively choosing to receive treatment. Conversely, proactively providing treatment to all patients, with the option to “opt-out” of care, appears to double medication use and counseling participation, increase quit attempts and increase the probability of quitting. Moreover, patients like the process. This presentation will present the evidence for opt-out care and describe how it can be implemented in real-world practice.
