Dr Jürgen Rehm 

Director, Social and Epidemiological Research Department, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Canada

Dr Rehm will present recent changes incorporated into the WHO Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health for 2014, the ongoing work for the Global Status Report 2016 and the ongoing Global Burden of Disease Study comparative risk analyses for alcohol with respect to:

  • causality 
  • changes in effect size
  • implications for burden.

He will specifically address the impact of alcohol on ischemic heart disease where the shape of the risk curve has changed, the impact on cancer where the interaction with genetics in Asian countries will be incorporated and the impact of alcohol on HIV incidence and course of disease using new meta-analyses of experimental studies on the causal impact of alcohol on unsafe sex. For alcohol use disorders, trends in prevalence will be presented as well as a new comprehensive meta-analysis on mortality.

Jürgen Rehm, Ph.D. is Director of the Social and Epidemiological Research Department at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Canada and the Inaugural Chair for Addiction Policy at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. He is also section head for epidemiology at the Institute for Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy of the Technical University Dresden (Germany). Dr. Rehm has published more than 700 peer- reviewed journal articles in addiction research, is among the ISI/Thompson Reuters most highly cited researchers in the fields of social research and epidemiology and has been awarded the Jellinek Award, the most prestigious global award for alcohol research. He has served as consultant to many countries and is member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel of on Drug Dependence and Alcohol Problems.
