SCNAT-IP

The SCNAT-IP is an evidence based supportive care needs assessment tool which accommodates the language, customs and culture-specific needs of Indigenous people with cancer.

BACKGROUND

Disparities exist in outcomes for Indigenous people with cancer compared to the non-Indigenous population. A complex interplay of patient, health system, socioeconomic and cultural factors contribute to these disparities. In addition to poorer treatment and survival outcomes, many Indigenous cancer patients have moderate to high unmet needs, and a range of worries, cancer-related fear and negative feelings. While limited data is available on the supportive care needs of Indigenous cancer patients, assessment of these needs and whether they are being met or not is important in improving their health outcomes and quality of life.

Support needs may differ across cultures and to date there is limited information regarding the unmet needs of Indigenous Australians with cancer.

As a health professional working in cancer care, you can use the SCNAT-IP tool as part of routine practice to identify the unmet support needs of your patient. The SCNAT-IP tool has been designed to be delivered verbally to the patient and will take around 15 minutes to complete.

Accurate measurement using the SCNAT-IP tool is important to improve care for Indigenous people with cancer.
