WOMEN study

What is the Women's Optimal Metabolic Energy and Nutrition (WOMEN) Study?

The WOMEN study is being conducted as part of a student research study at The University of Queensland. This study is recruiting premenopausal women to measure their body composition, resting metabolic rate, dietary intake and physical activity.

The purpose of the WOMEN study is to understand the metabolism and body composition of premenopausal women (without breast cancer) and compare them to premenopausal women with breast cancer, who have participated in a previous study. Understanding these differences will inform our research and help us to provide better weight management support for younger women diagnosed with breast cancer in the future.

What will happen if I decide to take part?

You will be asked to take part in a one-off assessment. This assessment will include three parts:

  1. Measurement of your resting metabolic rate and body composition (conducted at the Mater Campus in South Brisbane)
  2. Measurement of your dietary intake over 3 days (entered into online software)
  3. Measurement of your physical activity over 7 days (by wearing two activity monitors)

At the end of the study, we will provide you with a report with feedback from these measurements and provide you with personalised recommendations and links to additional resources. An Accredited Practising Dietitian will review your results and write this report.

Who is the study for?

This study is recruiting premenopausal* women without breast cancer who are close in age, height and weight to the women we have previously enrolled (i.e. premenopausal women with breast cancer).

*We define premenopausal as experiencing menstrual bleeding at least once in the past 3 months and no change in menstrual frequency in the past 12 months. For the purpose of this study, women taking hormonal contraceptives such as the oral contraceptive pill, Mirena (or other IUD), or Implanon (contraceptive implant), will be ineligible.

Please review the table below and see if your age, height and weight fall into the range matching with one of our women:

What are the benefits to me if I take part?

You may not receive any direct benefit from participating. Your participation in this study may help other women in the future, particularly young women diagnosed with breast cancer. To thank you for your time, you will receive a personalised report once you complete the study. This report will include details on your:

  • Metabolic rate
  • Body composition (fat and muscle mass)
  • Dietary intake
  • Physical activity (including moderate-to-vigorous activity and sedentary activity)

Current dietary and physical activity recommendations will be provided in the report, along with links to resources to obtain more diet and physical activity advice.
