Established in 2009, HealthLinQ was part of the Queensland branch of the Population Health Research Network (PHRN) which was federally funded as part of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy. The centre facilitated access to linked administrative data and provided consultation services to researchers who were interested in using linked administrative health data. It also conducted its own data-driven research that informed policy and served to improve the health of Australians.

As of June 2014, the SPH-based centre ceased operations. The Queensland branch of the PHRN will be exclusively managed by the Statistical Analysis and Linkage Team (SALT) within the Health Statistics Unit at the Queensland Department of Health.
