Making sense of your data can be one of the most daunting and challenging aspects of qualitative research. This half-day workshop is the fourth in our workshop series and aims to:

  • provide participants with an introduction to some different ways to approach qualitative data analysis, and

  • delve into the mechanics of methods including content and thematic analysis.

Participants will have the opportunity to practically apply this knowledge, exploring how different methods of analysis influence findings and conclusions drawn from qualitative data.

Dr Emma Heard: Emma is a qualitative public health researcher with experience in health promotion and working working with diverse groups, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations, young people, people in prison and people in the Pacific. As a lecturer in the School of Nursing, National University of Samoa, Emma conducted a range of health promotion and research projects focused on chronic disease and sexual health and wellbeing. Emma’s PhD explored the application of an intersectionality perspective in health promotion with young people in Samoa, focusing on understanding intimate relationships and intimate partner violence.

Dr Amy Hickman: After seven years working as a paediatric nurse at Boston Children's Hospital in the USA, Amy returned to University to explore the intersections of expert medical knowledge and practice with everyday ways of knowing about health and disease. Amy received her PhD from the University of Arizona in 2016, and now lives with her family in Brisbane.  Amy's research interests are  health communication, participatory and community-based research methodologies, and  health promotion.
