This one-day workshop is the second in our series, and will guide attendees through the process of successfully conducting thematic analysis. It will cover:

  • The fundamentals of qualitative research
  • A fun, hands-on activity introducing the practical aspects of coding
  • A step-by-step guide of applying thematic analysis
  • Reflexivity
  • Different approaches to analysis
  • ‘Good’ or ‘bad’ practice


Dr Claire Moran: Claire is an honorary research fellow in the School of Psychology at The University of Queensland (UQ). She has almost 20 years' teaching experience and has delivered numerous lectures and international presentations on qualitative research. Of most relevance, she has developed and facilitated a workshop that offers students a strong grounding in thematic analysis and guides them through the process of conducting an analysis. Claire has run this one-day workshop at the Qualitative Research Summer School at Dublin City University (Ireland) for the last three years and in the School of Social Science at UQ for the last two years with great success. She has published widely on a range of qualitative methods across both social science and biomedical journals (including thematic analysis, discourse analysis and multi-modal critical discourse analysis). She is currently the Manager for Tertiary Education at True Relationships and Reproductive Health, and a Lecturer in Domestic Violence at QUT (Brisbane).

About 2019 School of Public Health Workshop Series

The School of Public Health is hosting a series of workshops on qualitative research in the latter half of 2019. The workshops are open to UQ Staff, HDR students and external health professionals/researchers who are keen to understand more about qualitative research.


The cost of this workshop varies for UQ staff and students (free) and for non-UQ staff ($80).
