Designing and conducting a qualitative research study is the first of our workshops, and is considered a comprehensive beginner's guide to qualitative research. In this half day session, we we will work together to:

  • explore the historical  "roots" of qualitative inquiry, and
  • understand how qualitative research can help to build knowledge that matters in our disciplines.

This workshop includes a panel discussion with qualitative researchers (who work in public health) as they describe the processes the use in designing their studies. We will also work together to brainstorm design ideas that are specific to the needs of workshop participants.

Dr Liz Barber: Liz completed a Master of Public Health at UQ in 2005, in which she explored gaps between the evidence, policy and practice of sexuality education in primary school.
Her mixed methods PhD explored links between children’s health and urban nature. Creating innovative study designs, unpacking complex data and developing pragmatic applications for research are a few of her favourite things.

Dr Amy Hickman: After seven years working as a paediatric nurse at Boston Children's Hospital in the USA, Amy returned to University to explore the intersections of expert medical knowledge and practice with everyday ways of knowing about health and disease. Amy received her PhD from the University of Arizona in 2016, and now lives with her family in Brisbane.  Amy's research interests are  health communication, participatory and community-based research methodologies, and  health promotion.
