Professor Amanda Lee

Amanda Lee is Professor of Public Health Policy in the School of Public Health at The University of Queensland and Senior Advisor at The Australian Prevention Partnership Centre at The Sax Institute. She has expertise in health policy, public health nutrition, food systems and Indigenous nutrition. Her major area of research is the development, implementation and evaluation of nutrition policy actions to prevent and help manage malnutrition and chronic disease.  Her work takes a strong systems focus, underscored by the pillars of health and wellbeing, equity and environmental sustainability. Amanda was Chair of the NHMRC’s Dietary Guidelines Working Committee and is Chair of FSANZ’s Consumer and Public Health Dialogue. Globally she is an advisor to the PR China, Canada and other countries on dietary guidance, and lead of the Food Price and Affordability domain of the International Network for Food and Obesity/NCD Research, Monitoring and Action Support (INFORMAS).

Poor diet is now the leading preventable risk factor contributing to the burden of disease globally. Poor diets are driven by our current food system, which in addition to contributing to poor human health, is also a major determinant of planetary health. Amanda’s presentation will review the complex relationships between food intake, health and environmental sustainability, discuss Australia’s past efforts and topical international recommendations to improve our food system, and outline implications for future dietary guidance globally and in Australia.
